Almost to Freedom by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson (2004) Tells the story of Lindy, a slave on a virginia plantation, from the perspective of Sally, a doll made by Lindy's mother. This beautifully illustrated book was the winner of the Coretta Scott King award for childrens literature. Out of print now, this book comes with a handmade replica of Sally.
